If you want quiet, just don't go during the Sturgis Motorcyle Rally.....;-)

I went there once, having seen photos of it all my life of course like we all do. I was totally awed to see it in person. It was just so much more amazing to be there in person. That was back in the mid eighties. It was rustic, but had beautiful flags flying all along the walkway that lent some extra color and national pride. I hope they haven't made it into some kind of crazy overdone tourist trap like so many of the national attractions have turned into.

My husband and I went a few years ago. It wasn't as big as I thought it would be. It's wouth the trip just to see SW South Dakota. It's beautiful there. We went to Wind Cave NP and climbed to the top of a fire lookout where we could look out over the prairie. I could almost see the conestoga wagons. Great fun!

We have gone twice and it was awesome. People all around speaking in foreigne languages. There are a lot of neat things to see out here. I am afraid that the Hollywood set has found us. But we don't bother them is they don't bother us...Be sure and drive through Spearfish Canyon if you come this way, and we do have some nice little quilt shops along the way. And we have even found garnets in some of the streams and of course a little gold. But don't tell anyone...the camping is great, but be sure to bring coats, we have had to wear coats on the 4th of July at night to watch fireworks....and there are not those pesky biting bugs in the hills. they all moved to MN.

I went as a child, 50+ years ago and still remember seeing how the trees growing among the rocks added dimension to the beautiful carving. I am sure there is a lot of new things around now. One favorie from years ago is the Wall drug store. They have signs all along the highway like the old Burma shave ads saying so many miles to Wall's drug store.
Hope have the chance to go and post pictures when you return
