After reading the "throw away or not" post, reminded me of this: Daughter had gotten married, and I kept telling her to get her stuff out of her old closet (was making her room into my sewing room). She kept putting it off, so one year, I took her prom dresses and graduation cap and gown and put them in a box, wrapped it up in beautiful Christmas paper and put it under the tree. I had used a box that a coat came in, so she thought she was getting some huge gift. The look on her face when she opened the box was priceless. She still has her strawberry short cake dolls, barbie dolls, and cabbage patch kids in the attic. Her dad keeps threatning to throw them away. Maybe this year she'll get another big present.

There comes a point that Mom and Dad's house is not a storage locker:) Good idea.....gift or donation....both works for me:)

You can always so what my mother in law did. My husband and I had been married 4 days when she made an impromptu surprise trip to our house (we took a late honeymoon). She drove over 11 hours, across state lines with a loaded Subaru. She brought everything that had been in my hubby's room. So along with our brand new apartment that we just moved into, our wedding gifts, we then had all his childhood momentos. Got the stuff out of her house though lol

I put all my DD's things in the boot of her car when she came to visit. She didn't notice them until she got home and then rang me to ask me why. My point was that she now had a home of her own and could keep them there from then on!

My mom felt sort of the opposite-she WANTED us to leave stuff in our rooms-said it made it a little like we haven't really left home-said she wanted us to feel at home everytime we came to visit. After she died, we had to clear out the house to sell it, and it was a really sentimental time going thru our childhood. Unfortunately, we donated most to AmVets, and some of it I wish I had back!!
