You can hold the ALT key down and press 155 down on the keypad, release the ALT key and you have the ¢ sign.
I also hold the ALT key down and press 167 and you get the degree º sign. Great for typing recipes.

ascii codes are also great when you need to type spanish words. ie é, ó, ¿, etc. On a laptop you will need to press the "num lock" key and use the keys that have the numbers on them...m=0, j=1, k=2 and on.
