Baseball bat kept under the bed....a pistol in easy reach.....perhaps a baseball bat under the couch would also be a good idea. Texas changed their law about protecting property several years ago. You can shoot anyone who is threatening you or your property if you are in your home, or in your car...not too many questions asked. Crime has decreased considerably State wide.

My dh used to drive us nuts. He would lock everything up tight as a drum, and meet us all at the door with a gun in his hand. THis was when my son and dil still lived here (in Florida) with us. After a while, we told him ENOUGH!! I threatened to take his guns away from him, lol. I was afraid he would wake up half asleep and shoot one of us.
We live alone with just the two of us, the four doxies (great alarm system) an ADT system, and guns conveniently placed. No more having to fight him off at the door, lol....but...anyone who thinks they can break in, lol...had better be Houdini. The doors and windows are alarmed, and I guess the doxies are "alarmed" too, lol. Nothing like four hounds to let you know there is someone or something out there.
I don't worry about anyone breaking in while we are gone because the house is alarmed, and the neighbors keep an eye on each other. But frankly, woe to anyone dumb enough to break in while we are here. That's not robbery. THat's just plain stupidity.

No matter where I sit I don't even have to straighten my arm and theres something to stop any invader and if that don't work I'll throw the 'Old Lady' at them-She's my 30+lb Calico cat, she put 62 stitches in a PitBull's face and chest last summer

My rotary cutter comes to mind. I know it sliced my finger really easily so it could cause some real damage.
My husband collects railroad builders plates. They are made of brass. We couldn't carry one on an airplane so they may good for a weapon. They are hanging all around the house so readily available.
