i know how it happened and it wasn't the service. i might have used ANY service. i found them, not the other way around.
i received an email that looked absolutely legit form 'hotmail' asking if my account was still active. to confirm that it was, would i confirm some info. name, etc. no password, no id. year i joined. like that. that's when the problem began.
i spent about 10 hours trying to fix things and then went online looking for a repair service. i decided on this one. there are dozens. they did the job. i got in. the hackers kept changing things.
after much messing around with forms sent to me by hotmail, i found my original profile form. that's when i saw it had been messed with, explaining why i couldn't log in. where my password belonged, someone had introduced a crazy one, and changed the secret question, my age, location, education, occupation and all.
finally, finally, after working with what i knew and what hotmail now knew they sent me different information and different questions. again, I REQUESTED THESE. after i filled these out, progress began being made. they were able to bypass the whole password mess and i got in with no password. since we couldn't get through it, we got around it. they were very helpful throughout but no one was able to determine exactly what had happened.
i'm not worried about the service. as i say, i picked them out of dozens. i just don't know if it's safe to import the contact list. copying is a giant pain in the a**. there are 123 friends, relatives and businesses. i have to open each one and copy the insides.

This happened to a good friend of mine in December. We all knew it wasn't her and I called her immediately. From the language in the e-mail it was obvious is was not a native english speaker and she would never talk like that. We all knew that she had been hacked.

Okay, so you picked the service, so that wasn't a scam.
