Try joining another site called "Flylady".
I was suggested to me a few years ago, and has a lot of sensible tips.

you mean those little gray furry things under the couch are'n pets? Thank goodness my DH doesn't mind a house that isn't as clean as it used to be - have discovered that we don't have enough company to worry about being extra clean and the ones that count usually give enough heads up that I can at least make the front rooms ready for inspection as long as they don't inspect too closely. As long as the LR is straight and the bath clean I can pretty well face most people.

Just read a tagline by Rhonda Laws on another forum:
Remember, people will see your quilts long after you are gone - NOT your housework.
While this doesn't answer your question directly, it helps put what we do in perspective.

My kids don't like my house with the dust and clutter. Too bad. They can come clean it like they want or hush up. I am slowly plowing through some of it, but I can always find something better to do. I keep the kitchen and bath clean.

I tell people that I have the chaos syndrome--Can't Have Anybody Over Syndrome. Let them think what they want.

Like "Maxine" says, just keep a few Get Well cards to spread out on your coffee table before you open the door to company so they'll not judge your house messy since it's obvious you've been sick!

most people with super spotless houses are ocd, i know some, they freak out if a crumb falls on the floor
    --------------------------------
I find that some times it pays to hesitate for just a moment, maybe one of the cats will grab the crumb and either eat it or hide it. Dogs are even better, they'll eat anything in mid air that falls towards the floor.

Can't stand a sink of dirty dishes in the morning! I raised 7 kids and lived on a farm for a dozen years, so I'm a little relaxed about housework. It will be there when I get around to it. And THIS ...yes, this is EXACTLY my feeling!!! It's not going anywhere... :-D

A trick I was told was to keep the vacuum and a dust cloth close to the front door. Then when someone comes unexpectedly, just point to them and they will know you were just about to......
