Am vacationing in these states with my daughter and son-in-law in early October and I have absolutely no idea how to pack. Will Sweat shirts plus a jacket be enough or too much? Do we need heavy coats, etc.? I would really appreciate any input from people who live in the area. Thanks.

It's been known to snow in SD in October...but more toward the end! :D

I'd say sweater/sweatshirt for sure and bring a coat. You get warm-ish fall days, but as soon as the sun goes down it is brisk!

Do not bother with shorts or carpis...that time is over like, NOW. :D

I check the Weather Channel for 10 day forecast the day before I pack....even then it is suspect this time of year.

It was supposed to snow in Pinedale last night.Be prepared for cold. I live in Rock Springs WY, and it is usually 10 degrees colder here than Salt Lake. We frequently have snow for Halloween.

For Utah - it depends which end of the State you will be. Up north - cool. Down South where I live it will probably still be warm. Maybe you could stop by and we could meet! Are you going to National Parks?

Layers, layers, layers, don't forget your snow boots; October means snow in those parts, or maybe sunny & 70....which ever way the day ends up, it'll be chilly in the morning

Jeans, T-shirts (heavier ones now) and sweatshirts. I'd also take an all weather jacket. It tends to rain at this time of the year and can get cold suddenly.

Yup, layers is the best way to go. Will you by chance be visiting Yellowstone? And maybe Mount Rushmore? Sounds like a fun trip.

Being a Utahan most of my life I can tell you that Oct can be warm or a blast of 2 ft of snow. It really requires layers. Generally the fist 2 weeks, you start out in the morning with a jacket, afternoon you go to short sleeves and then evening is jacket. The last 2 weeks, is light weight long sleeves to sweat shirts if it is snowing. Just watch the weather.
