Is it better to stay with medicare and pick up a supplement instead of going with one of the advantage plans??

If you're able to manage the 80-20% split of straight Medicare you have the choices of any Dr. or Hospital that accepts Medicare and you don't have to have the approval of a supplimentary Medicare Insurance Co. telling you you're not covered to go to a cancer hospital or any medical facility.

I have a Medicare managed care program, due to my financial situation, if I had the choice of affording straight Medicare I would in a heart beat. I have many health issues and I go through being denied tests, CT, MRI's because managed care says it's not life threatening, YET. I just won one MRI request and found I'm facing loosing the use of my legs because of a back condition but they still will only cover pain treatment not any attempts for correction. Enough said....

Part A is automatic at age 65 if you have 40 quarters on your own working record or if you spouse has already earned his 40 quarters then you can be entitled on his record. Part A is free. Your message states that your spouse is still working, so you can defer Part B until he stops working. You have 5 months from his last day of work to enroll in Part B. You will need a special form to verify his work and current insurance coverage for you under his employer insurance plan. What you will pay for Part B is determined by your income. My advise is don't wait during those 5 months, there could be a penalty imposed for late enrollment. For more information call 1 800 772 1213. Although this is Social Security, they can be of great help and answer any questions you have and send you any material on the subject. I'm sorry I won't be the one answering the phone, but I hope I have been helpful today.

Hi - I'm not Medicare age...but, researched a lot for my Mom and Grandparents. I know that you will be penalized if you are eligible for Part D and have no other coverage...and you do not enroll. They will retro charges from when you first were able to enroll.
So confusing, esp with new Healthcare rules and everyone trying to get rid of the "new" stuff that just began!
    Good luck.

Boy, I will be there soon enough, thank you so much for the valuable tips. I always wondered what I should do. Do you have to notify them when its time for part A if your still on hubbys???

If you sign up for part A you are on the right track. You won't need a secondary for the other 20 percent because you DH' insurance will act as that. i would call your husband's company and they will tell you for sure. Medicare approves a certain amount of the bill and then medicare pays 80 percent of the approved amount and the other 20 is picked up by the secondary. And always ask your doctors is they accept what medicare approves. If they do then is there is anything over and above that the doctor's office writes that off. Hope this helps understand this mess. suzanne

Please double check the above. In California, when one spouse is working, that insurance is Primary and Medicare is Secondary.
