As to 10% to God, that is a tithe which means one tenth. It is always our option to give more if we choose. You can't outgive God!

i tip my haircutter according to the full amount of the haircut. the work is the same regardless of my age. so the tip for the $9 haircut every 6 weeks is between $2.60 and $3, depending on whether i have change in my pocket. (i pay by credit card, but tip by cash always) he/she is happy. i have a good haircut. win/win.

I always leave a $5 tip. I was a hairdresser in my former life and seriously appreciate what my Jackie does for me. I only have it cut every 6 weeks or so. She has huge costs, you have no idea...chair rental, etc. I don't trust anyone else and want her to know what a great job she does in a real way. Remember, you wear a good cut 24/7.

I'm with QuiltMania. Tipping is out of control. I hate that a tip nowadays is 'expected'. A tip is for someone who has done something for you or done an exceptional job. And it should be MY choice to give it. Does the tip really mean anything if you were expected to give it to begin with? And why did the 10% become 20%? I don't mind tipping a waiter/waitress, if they've given good service.
I had no idea you were expected to tip your hairdresser. I don't go much, but happened to notice a tip jar one day. I also take my boys (4 of them) to the barber. I noticed that some gentlemen there tipped the barber. At $10 a pop for each boy, in less than an hour the barber had $40. Forty bucks to me was plenty per hour. I'm also told you leave tips in hotel rooms for housekeeping. I just think expected tipping is out of control. 8/

You know, you are saying, tipping is out of control, and there is not an arguement here.
But I think you are truly and honestly missing what the serving people and hairdressers are saying.
The GOVERNMENT WILL ASSUME that the worker received not only the $2.32 hourly wage, BUT ALSO 20% of every tables earnings. Eight hours on your feet for $18.56 in SALARY.
Less money for the days work than the cost of an inexpensive dinner.
Out to dinner is about $30 for two, at an inexpensive location.
That is $6 in tips. If the waitress had 25 tables, times the low end meal, then the government ASSUMES she made $150 in tips AND her $18.56.
Her taxable income that night is $168.56, WHETHER or not you leave her a tip.
If you disagree, that's fine. Do something productive about it, try to change the labor laws. But in the meantime, remember that someone is working for a living, not mooching and they are going to suffer for it..

i agree with aliaslaceygreen.
my haircutter gets $9 for my cut (senior discount). from that she only keeps a percentage. she also rents the chair. the gov't assumes she gets 20% in tips and she pays taxes on that. in my case she pays taxes on the full prices of $13, because the shop runs that special, not her. if i give her less, she pays taxes on it anyway.
she stands around on her feet all day. she only got the 'privilege' of working there because she brought customers with her. if she leaves, i'll go with her. she works hard to get my hair the way i like it on frizzy days and dry days and i'd be loyal and not cheap.
if i didn't want to spend the money, dh would cut it for me.
