If she was here, this would be resolved quickly and easily. But 600 miles away is kind of difficult. My husband almost killed himself trying to help and take care of his father during his last two months.

Mom had one in her house shortly after we lost dad. She first tried to beat the crap out of it with a broom then picked up the cat, litterbox and came to my house for the night... 2 am in her nightgown! It was hanging on the pine wall in the kitchen when I got there to get rid of it for her. She didn't appreciate it much when I told the bat I was sorry "grammy" was trying to beat it with the broom!
If you haven't guessed, I'm the one who rescues everyone here from bats, mice, snakes, spiders, and anything else that makes other girls run screaming!

Does she have a fireplace? My boyfriends parents occasionally get a bat in their house that comes through the fireplace. Maybe if she keeps the flue closed they can't get in. This is what my boyfriends parents do.

She seriously needs to get this problem taken care of. The guano from the bats (poo) is extremely toxic and carries all kinds of illnesses. It will pile up in the attic and can become so heavy it will cause the ceiling to cave in.
Can you call an exterminator in her area and have them check it out and you deal with the situation long distance? Sounds like she needs "Billy the Exterminator".

Mom got in touch with an exterminator and he will be out Monday.
We suggested she get in touch with a local catholic church but are pretty sure she will not do it. This is the first time in her whole 79 year life she is alone. She married at 17 and never spent any time apart during her whole 60+ year marriage.
She will need to work thru some of these issues and has never ever really listened to her son. (who is a very nice person and always!! willing to help) I cannot understand why she does not listen to a son who is the first one in the whole family to graduate high school and then college and work as a corporate executive for his whole career. She does not realize or care that her "I dont want to burden you with my problems" is more of a burden to him than just helping her.

My husband turns on all the lights on in the house and opens the kitchen door and they will fly out. When we let the dogs back in sometimes one will get in. My brothers when were little would use a tennis racket or badmitten racket to kill them. I know you are not suppose to kill them because they eat more than their weight in bugs. This was 45 years ago and they were killed.

I will pray for patience for you. Did she call for support or did she want you to go rescue her? Let your DH deal with her, and definitely have her call an exterminator. If she won't, maybe a friend could recommend one and you could do it for her.
