There is a wonderful children's book based on the story of this automaton called "The Invention of Hugo Cabret" by Brian Selznick. I highly recommend it for any child in your life. Don't be deterred by the large size of the book (over 500 pages) as it can easily be read a a few hours. The book consists of minimal pages of text accompanied by numerous pages of fantastic, detailed illustrations that must be "read" in order to follow the story.
This book won the 2008 Caldecott Award for the best picture book, very deservedly so. It was also made into a movie, which is probably the one Susan G. referred to.
A fantastic book by an extremely talented writer/artist. Yes, he is from the famous "Selznick" family of cinema fame.
