    My Grandmother who lived in Newfoundland, washed her clothes in the river, scrubbed them on rocks and laid the whites out on the grass ( to bleach the whites).

    I have a washboard, my hubby bought for me a couple of years ago. It's glass - not metal like the old ones, but it still does a great job on cleaning stains (which are mostly on his shiorts I might add...lol)
