I have a red and white checkerboard quilt that the congregation gave to my grandmother and grandfather (pastor) each white block had been embroidered with a name. My grandmother was very proud of that quilt and it was on her bed about 30 years. I think she called it a friendship quilt.

Friendship quilt? I'll have to look at that and see what it is.
I think that's something I haven't heard of!
Thank you! :P

How about just embroidered the word and letters:

Psalm 16:11

on the front and nothing else. Big letters. Make them look it up.

Remember that unless you have a huge machine with an enormous hoop, anything big will have to be re-hooped and at sometimes things don't align correctly (doesn't this always happen when you are almost done?)

Kberry, that friendship quilt was made in the 1930's and you may not find a pattern now by that name. It was very simple. 4 inch squares of red and 4 inch squares of white alternating just like a chess or checkerboard. That's all there was to the pattern. I think that it may have even been put together row by row instead of block by block. The white squares had the names embroidered in red. The idea could be copied much easier now with embroidery machines or with fabric writing pens. It had been quilted with a stitch near the ditch and was bound with red. The backing was a red and white calico and I am sure that was a common fabric in the '30's. Grandma would sometimes tell me about the different people who had signed it- it was really about her memories of the church while grandpa had been the pastor. Some people she had liked and some she hadn't. But she really liked whoever had made that quilt.

Tanya L that is very interesting.
I did look up friendships quilts. There are SO many different kinds now. I know folks have come and gone from our church. It's 13 years old. I am a fairly new member myself but its just like home.

I have thought that in the alternating blocks I would put Bible verses and add plain blocks for signatures.
I thought I would also add a Pen loop to hang the pen with so it's handy.

The very center block would be our Pastor's name
church name, and address.

Still in the air but I'll get it!
Two or more minds are better than one after all!

Tie the pen to the loop so nobody accidentally walks away with it. Use a string long enough to reach the farthest block.
