Around here it is the wet that drives them out of the nests on the ground and into anything dry and up....once I had them in the mailbox down at the end of the drive....Now I know there was never any food in there. I think when the climate changes just enough to disrupt their nests they seek new territory and unfortunately that can mean our homes...added bonus is food. I finally had to spray around the base of the house. You will not get rid of the ants by killing the workers...you have to find the queen. Oh dear this sounds like a bad SiFi flick....

I don't prewash but when there are dirty dishes in the dishwasher it is turned on. Maybe just half a rack full. My dishwasher may run three times in one day The cost of running a not full dishwasher is cheaper in the long run then prewashing or dealing with bugs or exterminators or dishes that sit all day dirty growing bacteria. Why have a dishwasher if you feel guilty about turning it on when there are dirty dishes in it but the thing isn't full? Never understood that reasoning at all.

hey Jan...i have the problem every spring. i wash the whole kitchen with bleach and water..the ant bait traps come out..i put them on the door sashing, between the main door and the screen doors...(yea, i know some folks in other states don't have screen doors. )
i don't see them in the house the rest of the year.
I hope you get rid of them!
FYI: i scrap my plates in the sink, then they go in the dish washer! ROFL

Diotomatious (die-o-toe-may-shus)earth, which is sold at pool supply stores for pool filters, can be sprinkled on your doorstep & it will deter them from coming in. It resembles baking soda, but is sharp to them & will kill them by dehydration if they do cross over it.
