Wow! Those are some tough requirements!

I've seen some wooden tables with 1/4 inch thick glass on top - the glass looks like is is 'floating' maybe 1/16 inch off the wood on washers (or something like washers)

After some more research I have decided to go with either a Tyvek or Mylar 'slip' under the oilcloth or laminated cotton. Mylar is non-reactive and is used in so many places we don't even realize it. It is made from polyester and won't stick without glue being used. If it does stick to the wax, in theory, it will peel right off. Tyvek, or house wrap, is a spun poly that is also used outside of home building. Large Fedex envelopes are Tyvek. Tyvek is easier to sew than the Mylar but it is not as smooth so I worry about it imprinting on the wax finish.

Thank you all for your suggestions. If you think of anything else don't hesitate to suggest it. I have to order all of the materials yet so I can make a change to the game plan if need be!

My husband suggested a good quality Marine vinyl in white, maybe?

You could double face the table cloth. Use the laminated fabric on the top and line it with the same on the back. They could get a glass table top, which to me sounds like the best answer for them. You can put little cork or clear plastic spacers that allow the glass to float above the table, allowing a bit of air flow, but keeping it clean. Yes, there are often little bits of water or whatever that find their way underneath, but there is no perfect answer.
