I remember when.....

I remember when a parent had the right to spank their child when they needed punishment without being afraid of the police being called and you getting arrested for Child abuse.
I also remember when Bobs Big Boy sold hamburgers 10/$1.00. and that was in 1977 when I was pregnant with my oldest daughter...man did I crave those stupid burgers.
Now I am not even sure that Bob's Big Boy is even in business.

telephone party lines, and you had to wait for Christmas to see if Santa brought you that new toy! Also, you "went to town" just once a week. If you forgot anything, it took too much gas to go back and buy that 25 cent item.....and I remember gas at 10 cents a gal. (from the '60's?)

Good topic! For those of you in the Boston area, do you remember when downtown Filene's was the place to go to get winter coats? My mother would drive us (we lived on the North Shore) to Nana's in Somerville and we'd take the bus/subway into town, on the Green line. Now, that was an adventure!
Sadly, the downtown Filene's Basement, if not all of them, has closed. But, what memories I have! For those not local to Boston, Filene's was one of only a few large department stores back in the 60's. Their "claim to fame" was discounting items after so many days (30 days) until rock bottom which when the item would be sent to the Basement (equivalent to our modern day discount outlets). Tables of dusty merchandise would be overflowing and there'd be racks and racks of clothing. There were no fitting rooms, that I knew of anyways, so it wasn't unusual to see grown women of every age stripping down to their underwear, right there in the aisle, in order to try on a dress, etc. Things certainly have changed. There will never be another Filene's Basement like that one!
