Maybe he has a bladder issue. Does he need to see the vet?

Our dog will come and wake my husband up every night at 4 am to go out. My husband is away at times so when he is not home she tried coming to me. I just told her to go lay down...and she did...and she still wkaes my Dh up when he's home, but she doesn't bother trying for me :)

I have six dogs and the female did this to us for quite some time. I finally shut her in the bathroom and made her sleep in there for a bit (she is not a barker to be let out, but would pester and stick her nose in my face to get me up). It is probably a habit more than anything and once the habit developed that we sleep through the night, I now know when she wakes me she REALLY needs to go.

My dog sleeps in a wire cage in a different part of the house. At first he would bark in protest, but I did not respond and he eventually settled down and went to sleep. After a couple of nights he stopped barking to get out of the cage.

Ignore him. 100% ignore. Usually takes one night to fix it but it has to be 100%. The same thing works for children who seek attention in the middle of the night.

I have 3 standard poodles. We have the doggies doors at both the Maine & Florida houses. The dogs have fenced yards at both locations. They let themselves in and out. They have been trained not to go into some of our rooms. Does the dog piddle more then normal during the day?
Is he drinking more then normal? Are you saying you limit his water intake durring the day to 3 cups? Unless there is a medical probblem the dog should have access to unlimited water. An adult healthy dog should be able to hold there urine all night. An ill or geriatric dog may need to go more frequently.

I agree with the bladder infection-vet idea maybe he is just getting older.

LOL. We had Hunter, my avatar, who went to the Bridge on 12/15 for 11 1/2 years and that was my life. We called it "Hunter on patrol". He would insist on getting up in the middle of the night to parole the fence in the dog yard to make sure all was well.

Right now I would give anything to have him do that now. Enjoy your "brat" while you can. The years fly by.

My youngest dog does that! We think she wakes up and can't go back to sleep and is bored, so she sits at our door and whines. Couple times I have left her outside all night. They have a heated doghouse so even if its snowing, she is fine. Seems like when we do that a couple nights in a row, she tends to sleep thru the night! :-)
