Do you live in a state where wearing a seat belt is NOT required?

I honestly can't imagine not wearing one. Second nature, get in car, belt up, start car, put in gear. Well Ok ... sometimes when in a hurry I'm belting up *while* I'm backing out of the drive :)

When I first started driving (1971) I tried to get everyone to buckle up because that was the "new but not enforced law" ... My mother refused to buckle up and told me I was being disrespectful (not as nicely said). I still buckled up but didn't require anyone else...fast forward 25 years...
DH didn't buckle up either.. UNTIL a close friend (young girl about our daughters age) was in a serious accident and told him that the only thing that saved her was her seat belt... after that we GOT into the habit... now, the car doesn't start till everyone is buckled....

There is a lot to be said for wearing seatbelts. Wearing seatbelts became the law in California on January 1, 1990. I had a hard time remembering to put my seatbelt on, but tried to be good about it. On March 15, 1990 I was in a near head-on car accident. A car ran a red light as I made a left hand turn on the right of way. Police said the man never hit the brakes. My car is what stopped his. The only skid marks were mine. I spun completely around and landed facing the opposite direction I had been coming from. I was wearing my seatbelt. I walked away with a bruised knee & neck injury from whiplash. So did my passenger. Police responding to the scene were expecting fatalities, or major injuries at the least. They were amazed. I truly believe I was not seriously injured, or worse, that day because I was wearing my seatbelt. Ever since, I have worn mine without hesitation every time I get behind the wheel.

In our motorcycle days, I was pulled over in Colorado because my child did not have eye protection. They DID NOT REQUIRE helmets, just eye protection. I thought that was really a strange law. We never went anywhere without helmets from the day we started riding 'til the day we quit.

glad to hear your now using a seat belt. I to at one time did not like the transaction from no seat belts to now being confined. But so is a wheelchair. I am so thankful nothing happened to my children or self in the days of no set belts. wow....

If anyone in my car argues about wearing a seat belt, I just tell them I don't want their body landing on me when we get in an accident. It has nothing to do with their safety, it's purely selfish. I don't wanna get squished. So either put it on, or walk :)

I think they were optional. I remember one neighbor put them in himself as after-market accessories.
