Default I'm making daughter's wedding dress...help!

I know, this isn't a quilting topic, but I'm sure all of you quilters out there will have some good advice. My dau is getting married in December and wants a dress made out of eco-friendly fabrics, sustainable, etc. We've decided on a style which will need some semi-sheer-sheer fabric (voile?) and a solid (stretchy?) underdress. She likes hemp, organic cotton, casual, pretty, not too fancy, etc. Any sources out there for such? Thanks for your help!

    ~ C.

Looking through search for sheer organic fabric there are some interesting sources. I don't have any experience with any of them, but this looks wonderful.http://olivialuca.com/home/html/fabic.php

Thanks! That's an excellent site! I just might make my own "mother-of-the-bride" dress from their fabrics.

Can't help on the fabrics. I just wanted to say how special that dress will be for your daughter. My mom made my dress in 1974, and even though we divorced that dress is still special because she made it.

I was shopping for sheets today at Bed Bath & Beyond and saw sheets made from Beech trees that was labeled "Eco Friendly". I confess I don't know any more than that. I will say it was very soft, light weight, and I think I remember it said it was similar to voile, and I would say it was semi-sheer. It felt lovely and would make great summer sheets!! It was listed as 300 thread count but it felt much smoother/softer - very close to the 630 TC cotton that I purchased.

ahhhh .... found the link and guess what ... it comes in both a regular weave AND jersey knit!!

Thanks Ellie...your thoughts are encouraging. I think that my dau feels the same way that you do. I just hope I can pull it off. Luckily, she wants something very casual...not the typical, $5,000 dress that you see in the magazines, so I think that I'm OK. I want to do some hand embroidery on it to put my personal mark on it....maybe even a little quilt piecing.

Thanks DHM! Ya know...I was thinking of using sheets. I can just hear my dau now, "My mom made my wedding dress outta SHEETS!" LOL I'll check that site out.

Bamboo is a great organic alternative. It is so soft that it feel like silk and wears like iron. There's an online store, www.bamboofabricstore.com where you csn buy it and they'll even send you samples.

i made my daughters' wedding dress. i used silk organza for the overskirt and a lightweight silk damask for the underskirt. we were on a very strict budget, so the whole thing cost less than 300.00. we were lucky enough to find the fabric at a local small fabric store, i'll see if they will mail order for you if interested. cotton lawn is very light, almost diaphanousyou could use a combinst silk
