Default An interesting place for a pincushion

I wish I could remember where I saw this idea, but my memory is letting me down right now. Anyway, someone else deserves the credit for this. I call it a "pin pillow" because that's what it is shaped like. I used elastic to hold it in place, the original used two lengths of ribbon, tied in the back. I changed one other thing - instead of the usual "leave a small space to turn it inside-out," I left one long side completely open. After turning, I put a small piece of index card inside, along the back, to protect my machine. Then I stuffed it and sewed the top closed by hand, since there was an index card inside. The card may not be necessary since most of the pins will go in a downward direction, instead of toward the machine.

Naturally, since I use a Singer 500 (Rocketeer) I used a bit of fabric with a rocketship on it.

tate ..i love your avatar & now i love your pincushion. i also love pincushions of all kinds and search the internet looking for ideas & patterns. i've seen several versions of this style. will be making some for my machines when other projects ending. i was going to insert a piece of cardboard in ones i plan to make. i made wrist pincushions for my grand daughters & i last year. used the cardboard from cereal boxes so that they didn't get hurt in the stabbing exuberance.

Something hard between the pins and your machine is good. Many antique machines have a pin rash from a pin cushion fastened on the neck. "An ounce of prevention is better then a pound of cure."

Excellent idea!I used to try to keep a pin cushion to the right of the presser foot but it was always in the way. This is my next fill in project. Thank you.

I've seen many old machines with "pin rash". They would just wrap a piece of flannel around the head and each pin would scrape the machine under the flannel.
But this is really the place where I would like to see a pin cushion. On the newer ones it could be on top just above the needle. I'm going to do that, someday, but I will but something hard at the bottom of my pincushion.
