I have an older Kitchen Aid and I have not had any problems with putting the blades in the dishwasher. You can order new beaters -- here is a link I found:

it sounds like it may be aluminium that goes black in the dishwasher, the only way to clean it is with vinigar and steel wool and lots of patience

There should be no problem with the metal beaters being put in the dishwasher but if the whole mixer was put in the dishwasher then that's a big problem. May in Jersey

From the discription the beater is aluminum. The aluminum will react with dishwasher detergent if the detergent is not aluminum safe. I worked in commercial foodservice for many years and I had to make sure the dishwasher detergent was aluminum safe so everything could be cleaned in the dishwashers.

I am my own dishwasher at home so I am not sure if an aluminum safe dishwasher detergent is on the retail market.

KitchenAid is a good brand so I would call them to see what can be done.

I've never heard of this happening. Yuck. Mine is coated with white plastic too.

It depends on the color of the beater. Some KitchenAids have the coated finish and some have the "burnished" finish. This sounds like the burnished finish, which I have read other people having the finish come off. She'll probably have to buy a new one, available on their website (http://www.shopkitchenaid.com/webapp...rm=flat+beater) or ebay.

I have washed my coated one in the dishwasher, no problem. I use Finish.

Try a paste from cream of tartar. I was told about this bt a friend, it really works well especially on stainless, but also on other metals

It may be the grease they have on the piece that goes over the post sometimes they over grease and other times they under grease, these are very easy to repair also . She should also try to clean it in hot soapy water by Hand

Same thing happened to my ice cream scoop and measuring spoons. Rub them with baking soda and you will get most of the black stain off.
