We stayed in the motel in Kolona a few years ago. As I remember, it is the only one in town but was nice. We went next door for breakfast. I don't think it is a Menenite community but an Amish community. We enjoyed our visit and have gone back one other time. Like others have said nice place to visit and lots to see and Iowa City isn't to far. Enjoy your day there.

I have relatives in Kalona and Iowa City and have visited the area many times. Kalona is an Amish and Mennonite community. Besides the quilt-related attractions there is a small cheese factory that we usually visit and always pick up a bag of cheese curds to nibble on if we stop there. Just up the road from the cheese factory is Stringtown Grocery, an Amish store with lots of interesting bulk sales items. (One time we found bags of marshmallows like those in Lucky Charms.) There is a great place to get ice cream and homemade candies in town. I forget the name of the shop, but I can ask my sister who married a guy from Kalona if you want to know. Also a great restaurant with home cooked food. Iowa City is not far away if you want lodging close by and also the Amana Colonies are a fun place to visit. If you are anywhere near that area, I think a visit is worth your time.
