I like to look on the bright side. That still beats the summer of 2011!

I saw several recommendations for Ohio, which I would like to add a "second" to! We moved here from upstate NY about 20 years ago. Central Ohio has very few snakes (although southern Ohio has some poisonous ones). The climate is better than NY, with much milder winters, and minimally warmer summers. The quilting community is strong in Ohio with guilds everywhere. And ohhhh ..... the quilt shops are wonderful and numerous! Every year my sister-in-law and a friend come from NY, just to go to quilt shops here. This year, a couple weeks ago, we went for 5 days straight, leaving from my house every morning, just a little east of Columbus. In 5 days we visited almost 30 quilt shops, never being more than 2 hours away from home. There are also plenty of Joann's, Hobby Lobby, etc.

Central Ohio has The Ohio State University, with a renowned hospital complex. There are many other big city advantages to Columbus to enjoy, and still be out in the country within a half hour or hour drive. Ohio also has some beautiful scenery such as Hocking Hills, Lake Erie to the north and the Ohio River to the south, a wonderful state park system, national and state forests, and the rolling foot hills of the Appalachians in the southeast portion of the state.

    Take a look at Ohio!

There are no snakes in Ireland. Are you willing to go that far? :-)

Nope! All American family here! And not a drop of Irish blood in us.
    The hunt continues ...

I get the no snakes part. Harmless or not, they cause me to get hurt trying to get away. I hate lizards too. Going to the theme parks in Florida terrorizes me because all the little lizards that will not harm me. Florida is out with the bugs and reptiles.

Really, any place east of the mountains on the eastern seaboard of the USA is just waiting for a hurricane to hit. Any place west of the mountains, gets the flooding when the hurricanes hit in the gulf. The most deaths from a hurricane in Va. wasn't on the coast but in the mountains when a hurricane which hit in the gulf came up the Tennessee Valley and brought tropical rains causing flash floods.

Here's in Richmond, Va. I'm 1 1/2 hours to the beach or to the mountains. I live where I don't worry about raising water. I love the 4 seasons. I do not like the humidity and as I get older it bothers me more so I don't think I could move further south. Snow is pretty to look at when it's falling, but nasty to drive in. I don't want to see it often nor much of it when it does snow. No more than 6 inches maybe 2 or 3 times a season is enough for me. Any place west of Richmond Va. or north of Ashland Va. is out for being to cold with more snow more often. Williamsburg Va. is a beautiful place. I would recommend that's a great place to live.

I've lived all over, and as far as I know, there's not anywhere you can say for sure there will be no snakes. That being said, I've only seen about half a dozen in my lifetime, so one every ten years doesn't sound too bad.

I'm a Texan through and through so of course I'm going to promote my home state. You can find every kind of terrain and climate from mountains to plains, from seaside to desert, from subtropical to cold winters, from humid to arid, somewhere in Texas! And there's plenty of quilters on this board from all over the state.
