Alaska has no snakes!!! However, it does get cold! I enjoyed your list and will be interested to see where you end up.

A lot of people seem to be moving south now. NC is a fairly nice state ...... we get do get summer weather and winter weather but not to the extreme. That's what I like about NC .... change of seasons, pretty leaves on the ground, and some snow now and then but usually does not stick around for very long. (Of course, weather patterns have changed so much this year that's it's hard to predict what will happen in the future.) I am in the upper middle of the state. You can go to the mountains or the shore for vacations/trips easily. There are several quilt guilds in the Greensboro area and the Raleigh/Chapel Hill area that I know for sure. There are probably more around too. Fabric stores? Well, if you want the best, move to Gastonia (or at least within driving distance of it) and you will be near the ultimate fabric store .... MaryJo's. Good luck with your search. I am sorry that you lost your home but good to know that you and your husband survived and are trying to move on with your life.

PS: Forgot to mention that there are snakes in NC but in the Triad area of NC, the only poisonous one is the Copperhead and there are some non-poisonous ones such as the garter snake. If you stay in the suburban area, you won't see many of them. And oh, I don't like snakes either ....... UGH ...... but have gotten used to seeing one once in a while. My dogs seem to help keep them out of the yard some.

Thanks for all the wonderful suggestions.

Right now, thanks to the suggestion of a friend, we are doing an internet search on Lilburn, GA. Looks pretty good except for the SNAKES!!!

Being near good doctors and an excellent hospital is important too.

(Especially when I keel over from heart failure after finding SNAKES in the yard!!!)

I really don't want to be anywhere near the ocean. I've had enough ocean to last me a life time.
I'd love to buy a small house for a small price -- buy it outright and be done with it.

Oh! Hubby just reminded me that we pay higher taxes here because of the amenities like water, sewer and trash pick up. I think those are important. I really don't want a well or septic system. I suspect that SNAKES might hide in them!

I'm in Myrtle Beach, SC and love it here. I belong to two quilting guilds and could belong to one every day of the week...but enough is enough! There are several local quilt shops, Walmart has fabric, but no JoAnns or Hancocks close by.

I think there are snakes in every state of the country, so completely avoiding them may be impossible. All I can say is that I haven't seen any of them yet.

There is no way to guarantee that you won't have a weather disaster, no matter where you go. But if hurricanes scare you (and I understand why they do!) then coastal SC is not the place for you. Having said that, we haven't had a hurricane for the 6 years we've been here. As for flooding, coastal Carolina isn't called the 'low country' for nothing.

I'm more afraid of run away forest fires than hurricanes...uh-oh, one more thing for you to worry about!

Good luck on your home hunting!

Hi Krystyna, we love Ohio. We live 4 miles outside of a small town on a state hwy. Guess you could call it "in the country" but, not on a farm. We use our GPS and love to just take lengthy rides in and around the country so we're use to drives. We have everything we need within a 55 mile radius including 4 LQS, a Hancock's and 3 JoAnn's yet have the peace and quiet when we get home. We have 3 Lowe's and a couple of Home Depots within that radius as well and a gozillion restaurants and fast foods. Ohio has farmlands, manufacturing , many lakes and parks, "THE" Ohio State Buckeyes.....YEAH!, Cincinnati Reds and the Cleveland Browns. Weather changes from year to year but, you know, no matter where you live there will be something to contend with whether it's hurricanes, tornados, blizzards, sand storms, flooding, draughts, etc. Dayton had a huge flood in 1913 but after the clean up they built 5 huge dams that took care of that problem. We have lots of greenery in the spring and summer and falls are beautiful. Yes, we do get snow in the winter but rarely incapacitating. We live in the west central portion. If you live in the suburbs doubt you'll ever see a snake, coyote or other things that go "bump in the night" LOL

I'd say Huntsville, but I am sure there are snakes somewhere!

Oh, and...our taxes are cheap, there is a JoAnn, there is Huntsville Hospital http://www.huntsvillehospital.org/, it is a metro city, but you can go 10 miles and be in the country, the fishing is great, and I will be here !

There is really no place like Northeast Texas...... BUT. We have snakes, tornadoes , sewers, and you would need to drive a ways to hit the big LQS but we do have a fantastic one that carries upwards of 1000 bolts . It does get dry here and we do get some snow but you will find the friendliest people in the US.

Are you sure you do not want to move to the inner cities in Hawaii?? Ideal temps there...not a snake I have heard but cannot say if they do or don't. We did love Alaska and Texas, but found our true location to be in the Mid West...with four seasons and a garden in the summer. Fresh beef and pork and chicken like no other anywhere. Excellent Hospitals and Doctors here. Snakes I have not seen here, a few in Iowa, but they do not like noise or people and tend to stay away from people unless you go hunting for them.

Life is very calm and quiet here, would rather it stayed that way...neighbors still help neighbors, send dishes to a family who has suffered a death in the family. Hunters tend to invade the area for deer or fish, but seldom see or hear them. There is a Catholic Church in town and surrounding towns.

You might also try Marietta Ga. There are 3 quilt stores and several large guilds. They host a quilt show every other year. I am sure there are snakes, but getting a house away from a creek should keep them to a minimum.
