I do use algebra for various things. How much per oz? in the grocery store. Was RN before I retired and used it many times at work. Dad was a chemical and electrical engineer and used it all the time too. So I guess the answers to his questions might be well it depends on the circumstances.

I know people that think if they have a calculator, there is no reason to know or understand the "rules."

One needs to know which keys to press to get a reasonable answer!!
