There are patterns around, but you just need to put a dart in each side of a square pot-holder before you sew the top and bottom together. The dart would be only an inch or two long for a large bowl or plate and two or three inches for a bowl with a small bottom.
Set your bowl on the pot holder and mark where the bottom touches the fabric. Darts should come about 1/2 to one inch away from that. The darts could take up about an inch from each side of the fabric.
