middle name

First and only name. I was not given a middle name and we did not give our 3 daughters middle names and they have not given their daughters (9 total) middle names. However, they have given the boys middle names which they need. Girls use their maiden names eventually.

I use my first name. When our first child was born it was "fashionable" in this area to name girls things such as Mary Faye, Marie Suzanne, etc. And then the child would go by the middle name because there were too many Marys and Maries around. Our daughter is one of those Maries. So she goes by her middle name, except the schools always used the first name. Very confusing. Our second daughter goes by her first name.

First name as I don't have a middle one.
I was first girl born into our family and by tradition should have been named after my father's mother, Nicolena. She was very ill before my parent's were married and told my mother not to name the first girl after her but after her daughter (Marie) who died at age 6. So much for death bed promises as I was named May, not Maire. Probably would have hated being called Nicolena when I was a kid but being called Nicky wouldn't have been bad. I have a niece named after my grandmother, but family naming has been more relaxed over the years as her name is Nicole. May in Jersey
