Yep. It's a thermowell. You can bake in it, or put a pot in it. Like a 1940's version of a crock pot. It will stay hot for hours after the gas is off. Beautiful.

Well, in my last couple of houses, I had newer gas stoves. Didn't have the money or the space for her. Since last year, when she went into the stove hospital, I have been cooking on a 1970's electric stove. It worked well, but it was butt-ugly, and electric. Here in tornado alley, it's good to have a gas stove when the power goes out. And just because gas is better for cooking.

He tried. He's my sweetheart. And handy. My ex-husband was also a sweetheart, but not handy. It was out of freon, no one seems to know why, after one season. but it's working now, and so is Buttercup! We made cookies and a barbeque feast today. Yeah!

It looks great, good for you, hard to believe they couldn't clean it up in less than a year.

They are very slow, but very thorough. I had the top re-chromed, and it does have a cover for the top, which has a big gouge in it, but that's the only damage to the porcelain, and since I cook every day, the top would just be an annoyance to me, so it's in the garage. And they replaced the thermostat. Just in case, and all the tubing, etc.

I wasn't ready right away, but a couple months ago, started getting impatient and bugging them.
