While I don't have a remedy for skunk smell, I certainly will bookmark this thread. My dh has caught, with a cage, 3 skunks just this last week, and luckily has not been sprayed. As long as the little critter doesn't see you he won't spray, just cover up cage with blanket, you hiding of course behind the blanket, then transfer to truck, take 15 miles away to woods and reverse process, to let him go. DH has been doing this for years.

De Skunking solution that worked for us:
1quart of 3%peroxide
1/4 C baking soda
1 tsp of liquid soap ( I used dawn dish soap)
rinse, apply to dog let sit for a while maybe ten minutes or so and rinse, do it again if there is any aromas left.
Hope it works for you

My son got sprayed when we lived in Nebraska and we had to bury his clothes and we used tomato juice (he still smelled for about a week). Anyway, I like the peroxide/baking soda mix. Going to write it down and keep it on hand. Thanks for the info. Sorry this happened to your darling "pooch". So cute.

eta: The best is a mix-it-yourself concoction. In an empty milk jug, mix 1 quart of 3% hydrogen peroxide, 1/4 cup baking soda, and 1 teaspoon liquid soap (pet shampoo will work). Wet dog with water and apply mix to his coat. It will bubble. Leave on for 3 to 4 minutes and then rinse throughly.

When I was little our collie dog got sprayed by a skunk. We didn't have tomato juice, so put her in the tub and scrubbed her with our home canned tomatoes. Her white ruff turned orange, and we were combing tomato seeds out of her coat for weeks afterwards. If it happened today I'd shave her first!

Sorry, I have a personal problem with the Massengil concept. I mean, really - whose girly part were so rank that someone made the connection to skunk? That is just nasty.
