I use the 1-4 part ratio also, but I pour boiling water over my sugar and stir until dissolved. Let it cool, then fill the feeder and store the rest in the fridge. It will store in the fridge for about two weeks. It is important to change the nectar in the feeders at least twice a week.

Enjoy!
Me too, or I heat it until the sugar is thoroughly melted.

Tip - if you start to get ants in your feeders, coat the hanging wire with Vaseline. The ants can't get through it to the nectar.

You only need to bring the mixture to a boil and then you can take it off heat. Boiling keeps it from fermenting too quickly as well as thoroughly disolving the sugar in the water. The fermentation aspect is also why it is important to change it often. Fermented sugar water can kill the hummers.

I have a cheap feeder that I hang close to the screened porch and I make my own nectar. I have had a hummingbird a few times but for some reason hasn't been back in about a week.

just until it boils, turn off the stove, let it set to cool, then i pour the mixture into my clean saved gallon milk jug and put in the refrig until I need it. a jug should last for about 1 1/2 weeks or more, but if you are cleaning and filling your feeders on a regular basis, you shouldn't worry about it going bad, I would say it will save for a long time in the refrig. WARNING: Make sure you mark the jug sugar water, I didn't once and my DH thought it was ice water and he took a chug right from the jug, boy was he surprised! Now its manatory for me to mark it ! lol - Lace

I had a hummingbird feeder last year but the bees got inside of it and had to throw it away, any suggestions to keep bees away from the feeder???? I want to buy another feeder but don't want bees! I saw a hummingbird at our front porch so I want to get a feeder.
