The day I turned 40 I also had a 4 month old baby. I don't remember wanting to get away, but a weekend trip as a family may be nice. DH threw me a party and all my friends came by. I had been sewing for a year only but already knew I was serious about it. It was fun to open gifts because every single one was quilting related. I got fabrics, threads, gadgets, etc...You know what she likes, you can give her a theme party, and arrange for the gifts to be related to that. Include the kids in the organization; my party was a surprise and the kids kept the secret very well.

I loved turning 40 and loved the gag gifts , so I guess it depends on the person and how they feel about turning 40  My sister got me a box of depends, Geritol, Oil of Olay face cream , STRONG reading glasses, can't remember what else.

I like the thought of a mother/daughter spa day, that way you can spend the time together

i made a basket of bath pretties for a cousin last year, and she loved it... bought a basket lined it with fabric, used some ribbon and filled it with pampering supplies... foam bath, shower gel, bath beads, scrubby puff, etc. :D I chose a scent i knew she liked and went wild :D

I didn't read the posts but how about a gift certificate for a pedicure, manicure or a massage.

a friend of mine is planning for her DH's 40th birthday right now. He didn't want a party so instead she's going to give him 40 gifts all about "40". I'm not suggesting you give your DD 40 gifts, but here are some ideas she is using:

40 birthday cards - She sent an email to friends and family asking them mail him b-day cards. She's keeping this a surprise by having them delivered to a neighbor.

    40 balloons

$40 gift card to his favorite store/restaurant

40 special family photos in a new scrapbook

40 minutes of one-on-one basketball in the driveway

40 notes, each saying one thing she loves, admires, respects, . . . about him

"40" snack jar - similar to trail mix (ie. 40 of each: M&M's, peanuts, marshmallows, raisins, pretzels, etc.)

And her list goes on, but that's all I can remember for now. She's trying to stay budget conscious and many of these ideas are free or cost very little.

Good luck with finding what's just right for your daughter. I'm sure whatever you do will be very special to her.

    :-D
