If it would fit over her head, you could just stitch the front, then use the buttons for decoration rather than function.

if you use velcro, cut it into 3 small circular dots. the strips are too stiff and icky.

Instead of velcro could you do a loop of elastic to slip over the button?

You can do btoonholes, I have faith in you!! Most machines pretty much do it for you

I think that buttonholes would probably be best. Do you have a vintage Singer buttonholer? They are easy to use and make absolutely perfect buttonholes every time. You don't even need a Singer machine to use one. They will fit most short shank machine (you need the one in the green case). I use my buttonholer on my Janome 6500 because I like the these buttonholes so much better than trying to use the built in buttonholer on my machine. You can adjust the length, width and style of buttonhole with these handy little attachments.

I think velcro would be too scratchy and uncomfortable for sleepwear.
