It you don't want to do button holes why not use round buttons and loops, personally I wouldn't want Velcro on pjs.

If you look around, they do sell Velcro dots for purse making. They would be great. Not points to scrape tender skin.

I think Velcro would be too stiff, and if it came apart, it might itch the skin and stick to everything it touches. I would put regular snaps and perhaps a small ribbon bow on the front. If you put something to close it and THEN a button, it might be uncomfortable if the child lays on her tummy. But, this might be the time to practice your buttonholes!

The Velcro wouldn't be that bad. It isn't like you're going to use a large pieces. You could stitch a cute ribbon on top of it. OR you could just attach some cute tie ribbons.

On Nancy's Sewing they use hair elastics and buttons to close up sweatshirt jackets.
