Did your browser get switched to open links in a new TAB instead of a new Window?
In Internet Explorer, Tools, Options, look in the "General" tab and look for "Tabs" - you can have links open either in a new tab, or in a new window.
If you open links in a new Tab, they order themselves all within the same window - if you close that window, everything closes.
If it is set to open links in a new Window, a new instance of your browser opens with each link. If I have my browser set up this way, I end up with dozens of windows open - my preference is for tabs.

There's an X to close the entire window full of tabs at the top right of the window, and there are little X's on each of the extra tabs.
You can click only the little X's on the tabs that you want to close. Or to close all the tabs, click on the X at the top right of the window.
This was hard to get used to when I switched over to Vista. I'm getting ready to put Windows 7 on this computer and I figure I'll have a whole new slew of things to get used to when that's done. Computers - gotta love 'em!
Hope this helps! :)

If the back arrow is highlighted (in the top left corner), use that to go back to your last page. If the back arrow isn't highlighted, then use the x to close.
A colored arrow wants to be clicked. A pale arrow means you are at a different site, not just still on the QB.

it is still doing it.
i know about the back button, but i appreciate any thoughts on this.
here is what i just did,
i opened up IE
went to gmail.
opened up Quilting board email, on this topic, and clicked the link to this thread...
i just read all your replies (thank you for helping by the way!)
the "back" button is available to use.
i can use it, or "X" (close) this window to go back to my email.
as a rule, i just close this window and go back to my gmail or yahoo, or where ever i am at. by x'ing out just this window, everything else should be left that was "behind" it. but it all goes.
in fact, now i am getting and error message, from microsoft, so i either send or not send the report..Then it all disappears.
