    My guess is that it is more a celebration of various cultures and ethnicity, and that one is not limited to his or her own heritage.

    It is not really specific... hence the 'African' themed shirt that he has - is good enough. Thanks for all your input/advice etc.

    I wouldn't worry about "cultural appropriation" since they are seeking to celebrate various cultures and ethnicities. I'm not sure what you would use but you could look at some of the indie clothing pattern companies. Some of them make patterns for garments from various countries.
