Toilet paper rolls a little soap and water makes clean mud! The kids love it!

What about french knitting...not sure what it's called in the US. Nails or U shaped brads in the top of a large wooden spool, wool wrapped around and the "knitting" forms a long snake as it emerges from the spool. We were taught this at around age 4. You can make heaps of things with it and it's quite safe for small people to do.

I think it's called corking, my mother showed me how to do that when I was a kid. I actually had a kit with different sized plastic shaped thingies to do it with, but she had a big bag with one she started when she was a kid... it was soooooooooo long! I think she has started to make a rug out of it, and then put it away. It must have been around fifty feet long, no joke!
I always made pot holders out of mine...

Day 2 done  Only one more to go  Today it was snowing/raining so we went to see How to train a dragon in 3-D , and started on a small hook rug. Wanted to start plastic canvas, but the first needle was too big for the canvas, and the second I couldn't get the yard thru even with a needle threader  , so we started a hook rug

Tomorrow as long as it is not raining/ snowing we are going to the zoo ! I also am borrowing another child this one is 4 so they can run with each other and keep each other amused , I hope ! LOL
