Might be a good idea to either send or take DH to the store to try on one of the new shirts. There seem to be so many different styles by so many designers that have slightly different ideas of what is a certain size that actually trying one on is best. Every human body is different in some way. And be sure to tell him how handsome he looks in his new shirts!! Men's egos are fragile and they need reminding often that they are handsome and smart, etc. Often.

I have done alterations, and this is one I don't think I recommond.
    This my opinion.
i did alterations for over 10 years also I would not advise doing this it will not look right and is way more work than it is worth. unless it is just one shirt to wear under a suit coat.

I think there are different cuts/styles to men's shirts -

The tapered ones that look good on the guys with slim hips and flat bellies

    The "regular" cut ones

And I think there might be "full cut" ones available for the guys with heavier/thicker midsections.

If the sleeve length is okay, and the neck is okay, and it goes around the abdomen nicely - you might have to live with a little wideness at the shoulder.

Same as for women's clothing - my shoulders haven't gotten much wider nor my arms much longer - even though a lot of width has been added elsewhere. :?
