From the training I have done with dogs....Never leave out a dish full of food! My dogs are feed twice daily. From what we have learned they then "know" if they listen a "special treat" is in order. My husband & I can point with only our fingers (usually do not have to say anything with vocal words) and dogs know what to do...and when they do, they get a special treat! Water is out for them all day "that is a must"! We have raised and sold alot of dogs, alot of people have called back saying that our puppies are so smart and very easy to train. Brag'g here but one of our dogs even says "I want one" and of course he knows that by saying this...he gets a special treat. Dogs are very smart and I feel they should be treated as a human...and you & I know that when "someone is treated withy repect" you get great rewards :) Good luck PM me if I can help you with anything.

congrats on the new addition to your family. I think you're on the right track. Puppies are just like kids food goes in about half hour later food comes out. Toys are all individual. Something to play tug-a-war with a ball for fetch and a bed so he knows where he belongs.

also...whomever your puppy is jumping on needs to be told not to give him/her attention until he/she has calmed down

attach the leash before you open the door to guests...a tiny quick yank on leash will get his/her attention just prior to jumping...reinforce w/ a stern command word you have chosen ("no" works but "down" would be better since the command will train him/her to keep paws on ground)...as your puppy listens reward w/ a small treat

TO THE OP: sorry you kinda got hijacked...however heres my 2 cents to you...lol

crate training works wonders...i started mine from the first moment i brought her home...however since you might choose to start now...try at bedtime...he/she will probably whine but will get used to the crate as his/her "room"

as far as feeding...read the side of the dog food bag carefully...some puppy foods list rations as twice a day amounts...some only list total for day...any dogfood containing real ingredients are best (altho they tend to be more expensive it is better for your baby dog)...i fed mine 2 times a day...once in morning and once in evening (12 hours apart give or take) (everyday same time i fixed my coffee/and every evening when i ate dinner)...i picked her bowl up 30 minutes after i set it down...she ate what she wanted but only in the 30 minute time slot...made it much easier to gauge her potty needs...(i had no poopy accidents in the house)

fresh H2O at all times except 1 hour before bed when it got picked up so she wouldnt have to go in the middle of the nite...

this is pretty much what everyone is saying so dont know if there are any new tidbits in here however....

have fun with your new canine child :-D

There are these really indestructible red/black toys made from firehose. They come in all sizes and saves having to pick up the mess when big puppy starts trying to destroy regular dog toys. Enjoy...puppies are such fun!

I think we fed our puppy twice a day depending on size of dog a cup or more. Read the bag. Water all the time.

We got 2 new pups in the fall. In short: feed 3x a day, a small amount each time. That gets them on a regular pooping schedule. Water all the time. Crates - we never did this before but it has been a Godsend. They sleep in their crates and are in their crates when we are not home - but we are retired, so we are not leaving them crated for hours at a time. They love nylabones and will chew their heads off. Have fun!

We just got a puppy this week end so I am with you!!! We have Yorkies, I am feeding the baby 3xdaily small breeds need to keep up their blood sugar. Our 4 year old Yorkie was on self feeding (we have to put her bowl up now when the puppy is out)I will always have my dogs in crates now. They love their beds & willing hop right into them. We do not use them for punishment tho. Our baby was not crate trained...she lived in a pack & play. It only took a day for her to like her crate in the day time & 2 nights for sleeping. Feeding her in her crate helped her enjoy it, also finding a bite of kibble or a toy helped her like it. Mine have soft beds inside the crate...little Zoey seems to prefer Lexi's bigger bed & I need to remind her several times a dat "This is Lexi's bed! Here's Zoey's bed" I will keep her on a 3xday feeding untill she's 6 months or so & housetraining is coming along.

Waht does your Vet recommend?? I did take up water at nite when house training, but the puppy is a year old and has learned to use the doggie door. so water stays down all the time.
