Um, chitlins aren't pigs feet. They are fried pig intestines. Yuck. But I do make blackeyed peas, cornbread (not because of superstition) and greens. My DH's family is German/Polish and they always had pork loin with sourkraut. So we mix the two!

New Years Day I make pork, sourkraut and dumplings. This is to keep my Czech tradition alive.

Don't really have any superstitions, but traditions maybe.

Used to always make pork and sauerkraut on New Year's Eve but don't anymore. Seems the sauerkraut we have been buying last number of years just doesn't 'cook down' like the kind we used to use.

This year we're going to have Tilapia from Costco ... yum it is sooo good.

Traditionally we always have nachos with shredded beef every New Year's Day ... the kids and grand kids are coming just so they can have nachos. But they will be here alllllllll day and trying to think of something easy to prepare to feed 12 people for late lunch or early dinner.

warm quilt hugs, sue in CA

Don't take out the ashes or do laundry on NY day or you will have one more or one less added to the family that year.

This is an Italian thing. Before midnight, we put out coins on the doorstep. Normally they are placed under the welcome mat. After midnight, they are retrieved. It is a tradition that ensures financial well-being in the new year. I use a 1964 half-dollar that I have had for years. I carry it in my pocket everyday. It been working for me so far.

Oh yeah, I also dress my avatar up as baby new year too. It's the first year for me to to this one.

OMG we have a ton of them.
Always eat chicken for New Years eve so your bad luck flies out the window and pork for New Years so good luck stays put.
Put money outside and bring it in on New Year's Day so you have money coming in all year.
At midnight you need to have sauerkraut between your teeth and money in your hand for good luck.
Eat a plum on New Years Day for luck.
One year my mom heard to put a coin outside on your bedroom windowsill and you will meet the person you are going to marry that year. (My sister and I both did it and the next year we both met new guys and got engaged. Both of us are still married after 34 years)
We too always make sure a hard haired guy is the first to enter your house.
Don't spend mony on New Year's Day or you'll be spending it all year, because what you do on New Year's - you'll do all year long. (Quilting sounds good.)

Wishing everyone Good Luck, Good Health, Lots of Happiness and Much Prosperty for the New Year.

Thirteen years ago, my husband and I had an awful year marked by unemployment, health problems, appliances that broke (furnace, washer, dryer, dishwasher)and assundry other nagging things that just tend to drag you down. We went to a friend's New Years Eve party, toasted each other with champaigne at midnight and I remember I uttered the words: "here's to a new year...it can't get any worse than this year"....my mother-in-law died 6 hours later. I will never utter those words again...because obviously, it can get worse...talk about superstition....and I'm normally a very optimistic person.

MY GRANDMOTHER ALWAYS HAD TO TAKE THE ASHES OUT FROM UNDER THE FIRE JUST BEFORE 'THE BELLS' (MIDNIGHT NEW YEAR'S EVE) THEN THE FIRST PERSON TO CROSS THE THRESHHOLD HAD TO BE DARK HAIRED AND CARRY A PIECE OF COAL. ANYONE THEN WAS WELCOMED IN AND EVERYONE HAD TO DO THEIR TURN (SING, RECITE ETC) WHEN THEY WOULD BE GIVEN A DRAM, A PIECE OF BLACK BUN AND SHORTBREAD. THE PARTY THEN COULD LAST ALL NIGHT!
