I always answer the door with my 130 lb "puppy" at my side. The smaller 100 lb dog behind me. Most people back off, even if they are legit.

i have someone coming to my back driveway and honking their horn, urgently, i have a scary looking dog, and this person, there is no way for me to see who it is clearly, they just point up at the big oak over me, it is kinda wierd, like they are warning me of the oak, but, and i say but, i put charlie the dog on the back porch and he raises a lot of noise, growls and snaps, then they take off like bats out of hell, they have done this three times, in the early, early morning and late, late evening. i stay inside, have called the cops, and have had the city look at the tree, what ever they want they can send me a letter, creeps me out, and with the hurricane, not a threat to me, it is strange. i have a feeling that they are either trying to lure me out, or sell me tree services. just scary when you live alone.

Former cop here: bottom line, DOESN'T matter what they are delivering or holding..NEVER open your door to anyone you do not know. A real professional would be happy to leave it on the step and go, as they would have other pressing deliveries to make.

Great idea, with a gun, that won't offer much help. Just don't get a false sense of security.

Good to know -- thanks. I once had a knock on the door, late late at night, asking if they could borrow an egg. I asked who they were and where they lived. Unfortunately for them, fortunately for me, I KNEW the household of the house they mentioned and knew no Brian lived there............later, after I reported to the police, I found out they had been going around to houses and uses that excuse to get in and rob the inhabitants!!!!! Better to be safe than trying to be a good neighbor!!!!

My Mom has a big scary dog and I'm so glad. In fact it takes him a couple of days to warm up to me when I go home
