Well, I had to google  should have paid more attention at school! William kept English as the official language, it was the influx of French speakers who affected the language - this was largely Norman French as the language at that time was very regional. Also subsequent Royal marriages to French speakers eg Henry II to Eleanor of Aquitaine - this sticks in my head because it was the million pound question by the first UK winner of 'Who Wants to be a Millionaire'!

A word my father used was 'blackardin'---it meant using abusive language or having a foul mouth. When I was very young I didn't know the meaning but liked the sound of it. One day, after a visit to my uncle's house, my dad asked me
what Uncle and Aunt were doing and I replied that they were blackardin. Dad wasn't too pleased that they were blackardin in a child's presence!!!

I later learned that it was a shortened form of the word, 'blackguard'.

sarsaparilla
sar-sa-par-il-la

- a preparation of the dried rhizomes of various plants, especially smilax, used to flavor some drinks and medicines and formerly used as a tonic

- a sweet drink flavored with this

- the tropical American climbing plant from which these rhizomes are obtained

Notice the spelling - I thought it was sasparilla - which may be why I had trouble finding it in the computer dictionary!

I had never seen it spelled that way before... and that is hard to find around here. We used to order it from an ice cream shop that went out of business years ago....I would love a glass of it again!!!
