I put 2 coats of primer on (sanding in between), found a Mexican tile design I liked and made a template. Drew the template on each block. Used paint I had left over from painting rooms and painted in the design. The black lines were done with a Sharpie marker. I then put 4 coats of clear MinWax on each panel. My only mistake was not to use a fixative so the paint migrated a bit. I then put them on the risers with a nail gun. I think they came out pretty well and didn't cost a thing except time!
