Some of you may remember the Robins who built a nest in our deck under the deck roof last year. We endured them until the babies flew away then knocked down the nest. They attempted a second nest but I put up cardboard to block them. So they left.

This year ----First the birds attempted to build a nest in our BBQ grill last week. We managed to get them to relocated.

Today we saw the Robins starting to build a nest in the eves of our deck. We knocked the nest down and went to church. In less than two hours they had built it back to where it had been. So we knocked that one down and put up cardboard in the hole. A short time later we saw TWO new nest being built in eves closer to our back door. So we knocked those down and hung up old CDs to chase them away.

SO FAR SO GOOD! The birds have stayed away. We love the birds, but when they nest so close to the back door and the grill we can't be out there until the babies are grown and fly off.

So if you have bird issues of nests or in the garden --- hang up old CDs!

I use CD's to keep the birds off our fruit trees. Have to alternate them with another method each year so they don't get used to them. Blown up wine cask bladders are also useful, along with tinsel and this year I tore up some old sheer curtains into rectangles and wrapped the developing figs in them (I just stapled the bottoms and the ends with an old office stapler. Amused my eldest stepson....he thought all the white envelopes were undies

I have also heard that hanging plastic bags to flap in the wind where they want to build nests help as well.

I'll have to try CDs to keep the starlings out of the chicken coop where they eat all the feed! They're too used to the plastic owl now! (The chickens will probably find a CD player and be bopping out to music all night!)

Wonder if the CDs would discourage squirrels?

Last year I hung those little tart pie tins in my peach trees. A neighbor ask what they were and I told her they were pie pan trees and when they got to be 9" I was going to pick them for making pies. Got a big laugh but I think she may have believed me!! LOL

Kitsie, I have the same problem with Starlings in my chicken coop. Let me know it works, I haven't found anything that will keep the Starlings away.

But I definitely like the CD idea to keep birds out of the fruit, but there seems to be no solution to squirrels.

Mary Ann, try this for squirrels: 1) Sprinkle red cayenne papper on the bird seed. It does not hurt the birds and the squirrels hate it! 2) Place a tub or garbage can lid over the pole which leads to the bird seed. The squirrels cannot get over the tub or lid without falling back onto the ground. They no longer even try to get at the seed in our yard.
Also, I did this one time: I bought a large length of PVC pipd--really large around. I sank it into concrete in the ground. Before I set it in the ground, I bored holes in it at intervals, all the way through the pipe. I then slid metal rods through the holes and hung the bird feeders on the rods. Some rods faced one direction and some faced the other way. The squirrels could not get any grasp on the slick PVC pipe and gave up. If you have a big deck, you can put the PVC pipe on a board with L brackets and then hang a weight from below to stabilize the pipe. Attach the rods in a similar way. You can have 6 or 8 feeders handing at one time. Have fun and good luck!

We bought rubber snakes at the Dollar Tree and weave them through tomato plants, moving them every few days to be closer to the tomatoes just beginning to turn red. They have worked well for us.
