I didn't realize that. So if a person has not had the chicken pox before, does this mean that they should not get shingles?

Oh my, you don't want the shingles. Had a case in Jan. 2009, Dr. mis-diagnosed. Had them from the back of my neck all the way down my left arm. Couldn't raise my arm for over a yr. , damaged the nerve in my neck that tells you to raise your arm. Still have pain in upper part of arm, where they were the worse. Was on pain meds for 3 months. Had a nerve test done in Feb 2010 and about 3 weeks later, just raised my arm one day. Glory be, that was something. Guess the shocking of the nerve test woke up the damaged nerve. I still don't have complete range with it, but it's better than nothing...They have a vaccine out, and advise anyone 65 or over to get it. But once you have the shingles you can't take the shot..Bummer.

My Husband has shigles in his forehead, his eye swelled thought he had sinus headache that made his ear and jaw hurt and had big ugly sores on his forehead. Doctor gave him medicine to help,a week later doctor gave him medicine to help with nerve pain, goes up into his hair. Now he still has ear and jaw pain, and dull headache. Pharmasist told him he could get a shingles shot after sypmtoms go away. My spelling is not very good anymore, sorry.

Hope you feel better soon. I had the shingles 3 years ago. I thought it was a spider bite on my upper back/spine area. Then there were blisters. I immediately went to the doctors and they started giving me medication right away. Please check yourself for any type of rash or blisters. This is something you have to catch right away to get medication. I was given an epidural for back pain about 2 weeks before. So, they thought the epidural (steroid) and a low immune system contributed to it.

Update...Well it has been 72 hours and no rash, so thank goodness I do not have shingles. I did however wakeup this morning with some minor chest pain (nothing like it was on Sunday), so I have to think that it must be how I am sleeping that is causing it.

    Default My Poor Fur Baby

I am so sad and cannot stop crying. When I woke up this morning, my cat (Opal, my avatar) walked over to me as I was sitting on the bed, putting my slippers on. She then walked over to the wall as if she saw something and banged her nose into the wall. She then turned slightly left and walked into the wall again and then she turned slightly left and walked into the wall a 3rd time. At this point I picked her up (which she did not meow as she always does) and I noticed her eyes were dialated. My husband and I took her to emergency vet care and the doctor said she has detached retinas. It can be caused by high blood pressure, kidney failure or thyroid problems. She is going to run a series of tests and also see the Ophthalomologist. We won't have any news until this afternoon. She will never have her sight again which is hard to deal with because I know how scared she must be. The other side is, if the cause of this is so severe, she may have to be put down. The doctor did not say this, but I know this could be the case. I'm also dealing with some guilt...if I had only taken her to the vet more often maybe this could have been prevented. I am sharing this with you because all of my friends and most of my family don't really care for cats and won't understand the pain I am feeling. Below is a recent picture of her sleeping in my sewing room chair while I was sewing. Thank you for letting me share this with you. I will update this thread later today when I hear from the vet.
