I made a bunch of outfits for my DGD's American Girl doll using Simplicity patterns. The waist was a bit small on the patterns so I just cut a bit bigger in the waist. I bought a cheap knock-off doll to use as a model and it worked great. The acessories are so expensive so I made purses, clothes hangers etc. It was fun and DGD loved them.

Hi Carol....I've been making AG clothes for years for my 7 granddaughters and now a ggd. The dolls have changed in size since the Pleasant Co. sold out to Mattell and you do have to be careful and fit the patterns to individual dolls. I have some pre Matell and some originals....the originals are chubbier. Simplicity used to have the best patterns...fit perfectly. McCalls I always found too big and clunky. Joan Hines has several pattern books out and hers fit very well. In my opinion, the newer patterns are sized to the skinnier dolls...I've made at least one outfit that I can't get on my first doll...pre Mattell. I bought a doll dress form from the Carpentier Co. which I use and it's perfect for the original sized dolls. Hope this helps.
