Patterns for sewing "garments" for preemies

My DD is a NICU nurse and I have made my share of bereavement gowns. The babies will not be wearing anything more than a diaper (if that) until they are a bit bigger and no longer encumbered with many wires and tubes. It is too difficult to work around the clothing, especially in an emergency situation. They also will not be coming home until they are significantly bigger.
As for something that could be slipped on if they are allowed body contact time with their parents, again, many hospitals would not allow things brought in from the outside. The NICU is a highly regulated 'clean zone' for obvious reasons.
Perhaps a couple of small cuddle type quilts for Mom and Dad to have in anticipation? As for clothing, I would aim for the 5 lb. size and again, commercial preemie sleepers and onesies would be easier to put on and remove than cotton, simply because they have a bit of built in stretch.
