Since then, of course, they've taken over the entire country as the lovely weed they are!!!
As the daughter of one of those immigrant families, I fondly remember digging them up for salad, and eating that salad! They have to be eaten when new, before they've had a chance to develop a flower (even unopened) otherwise they're bitter.

Dandelions are indeed native to most parts of the US though. But there are many sub-species that may have been introduced. The USDA lists it in the lower 48 as NI (Native and introduced).

I love them, not just to eat either. A field filled with blooming dandelions is a sight to behold.

Hubby and I subscribe to the theory that the definition of a weed is a plant growing where you don't want it to. One mans weed is another mans flower (or salad <g>).

I actually think the flower on the dandylion is beautiful. It is a gorgeous yellow color and it looks like a starburst to me. Sorry maybe strange..but that starburst is sooo pretty.

I was raised in the Quad Cities on the Illinois side. We would travel to Amana about once a year to eat at the OX YOKE INN, great food, served family-style. The Amana colonies are 7 German-Lutheran Socialist colonies that are in a circle and easily accessible. Winery's are the key word here. They made the best dandelion and red clover wine and it really had a kick to it. Anything you grew could be transformed into wine. Free samples, too.

One time I was changing sheets on our king-sized bed while drinking a glass of wine and got tangled up and stuck in the sheets. Had to holler for help. LOL
