My niece has decided her hand at being a surgical nurse (she usually works in the ER). She would like to make a few with some fun fabrics. I have no idea where to start looking, they remind me of the scarves I wore when my hair fell out from chemo. But I told her that I would ask to see if anyone here has some suggestions.

I bet you will find some patterns, just by asking Mr. Google!
Try different word combos that make sense and I am sure you will have luck.

Another option ... borrow one from her to use as a pattern.

Has she checked with the OR about restrictions? Many hospitals prohibit home made surgical hats due to infection control policies. OR snd invasive procedure staff can only wear hospital issued surgical attire that are laundered by the hospital and changed at the hospital.

Nancy's right, many hospitals will only allow hospital issued clothing and they launder it to the guidelines set by the infection control policies. Plus, it also helps to keep out imposters, amazing what people will do to commit crimes.

Having worked in hospital settings for a long time, their comments are true. However, many times nurses would wear the "fun" ones under their sterile ones during surgery and then when they go to meet the families etc, take that one off, showing the fun one.

The ones I am thinking about were simple shower cap style, so really, if you can draw a large circle and insert elastic, you wouldn't have to spend the money on a pattern. Tailored hat style would need one. Unless you are super good.

Nice project to look into though!

Our little quilt group made surgical hats for a big hospital and we tore an old hat apart to use as a pattern. We made all kinds of them from that pattern. Holidays, whimsical, etc. They have to stand up to rigorous washings.

FYI from the AORN : American Operating Room Nursing journal position paper in surgical attire. Interesting reading .
as a side note, The Joint Commission, accreditation organization that surveys hospitals tends to abide by these recommendations.

Our Mission Sewing is making chemo hats/turbans right now. I found at least 3 different free patterns on line. We ended up using McCall's #4116. It has seven different variations, all pretty easy to make. Reg price $14.99, but used a coupon at Joann's.

Thank you to all! When I googled for patterns I was rather overwhelmed and was sent to list after list, so thought I would ask here since there are so many nurses and mothers of nurses and volunteers that may have had prior experience with these.
