Soap only works if you get to it before it blisters. I've never had it work after the fact and I had it bad this summer. Had to go to the Dr. for meds to get rid of it. It got into my bloodstream and went all over my body!

If you don't hear from the Doctor, can you take him to a convenient care or the ER?
What if you just showed up at the doctor's office? Squeaky wheel gets greased.

change his pillowcase every day and wash in hot water. the will help keep it from spreading.

I'm with everybody else here...because the eyes are involved, I'd get him to the doc, and if the doc don't call back, urgent care. Calamine lotion works well for controlling the itch...

You can also put him in the tub with oatmeal and let him soak a little bit. That helps calm the itching.

Thanks everyone!!!

The doc diagnosed him as a mild case of poison ivy. He was mostly over it, by the time he saw him. The little guy even slept through the night last night with out any benedryl.

Thank goodness!!!

So how long was it from the time you called until the dr actually saw him?

uh oh! I had poison oak once... it started with just a couple of blisters... I didn't know what it was but it was awful itchy... within a couple of weeks it was EVERYWHERE... and I was miserable... I took baths in Calamine Lotion. It was in 1972. I hope there is better medication now. I would say take him to a clinic as soon as possible before it spreads... maybe they can help.

My experience with poison ivy (contact dermatitis) and 5 children is that the more often you catch it, the worse it gets. This is not something that you build up immunity to, but something the body reacts to faster and more acutely to each time. The second time may be a little bit worse. The third time really worse, the fourth really worse and the fifth very much worse. A geometric progression type of reaction. My doctor says that any plant that your body reacts to will cause the dermatitis; the poison ivy plants are just the most common. So you might KNOW your child never got around poison ivy and think the rash couldn't be poison ivy rash; but for your child it might be caused by milk weed thistle, or something else. It doesn't have to be poison ivy or poison oak or sumac. I'm so glad that in this case your little guy got off easy.
