The dog was probably heartbroken like raptureready said. When we go on vacaion my dog will refuse to eat until we come home. She'd sit by our bedroom door and wait. Needless to say we rarely leave home

I would have taken him home, just the way I am. I have 4 stray cats, 2 are feral cats. One large dog we rescued from an older douple who had him tied on a short chain and fed whenever. He was 1-1/2 to 2 yrs. old, now 12 years, I had to spend lots of money to fix his intestines, because of worms and got him neutered, he gets yearly vet, checks and heartworm med.s. He is an outside dog, don't trust him around 2 toy poodles, he is treated like a king now.
I try to do things so I can live with myself, not always easy, but, that is how I do things.

I just called the humane society and they just said that the dog went back to it's owner. Which meant the daughter of the owner. I'm holding myself back from being too nosy since there really isn't anything I could do anyway, but I am hoping that the daughter really cares.... I torture myself. There are a lot of poor dogs with owners that don't care so I guess that's what I think of. I'll have to get myself to think that the pup is warm and taken care of now.

I'm glad the daughter came and rescued her. At least the dog knows her. Hopefully she'll (the dog) stay put.

I don't think the daughter would have gotten her if she didn't want her. So I'm pretty sure she will have a good home.

Yep, an older dog with a collar - he got up and hobbled a bit back into the field when I tried to talk to him (through my car window). I could see that his back leg was bad and he seemed to be an older dog. I went to the nearest house to see if he belonged to them. Nope, and he wasn't aware of any dog like that living anywhere around there. So, I called the police. (Our humane society says they won't come unless the animal is contained) Waited for the officer who was a bit leary, but he assured he he'd call and let me know what happened. (I did have my 5yo with me and the officer didn't want me to wait there) Finally he called - apparently he did get animal control to help and they got the poor dog. And now this just breaks my heart. The owner recently died, and this dog had lived miles from the spot I found him. The daughter was on her way to get the dog.

I'm thinking I'm going to call the humane society tomorrow.... we aren't in a position to take on a dog right now, but I'm so afraid that the daughter didn't want to deal with the dog - how could this older dog have gotten soooooo far from home.... I know, I always fear the worst. This poor pup.
well, having just lost my Bitsy, I wasn't sure about reading this thread, but I'm glad i did, to know there are still ppl around like you, naturalmama!
Bless the poor babies heart, he needed help and God sent an angel. :)

Poor thing. Broken hearted is right. Years back we had to put our beloved dog down, she had a tumor in her stomach. She was 10. 1 yr later we were still sad about not having her. Went to local pound found this rat dog huttled in the corner of the cage. Hubby put his name on the dogs card which was a surprise to me. The dog was 6 pounds, and looked like a rat. EWW! Well we gave him a home. Took him to the DR's and he was so sick. Says he was about 4 . Had we not adopted him he would never have made it. A mutt he was gained weight.. 12 more pounds and looked like benji. Who would have thought. Had found out his background. He had been living in an abandoned wearhouse for quite some time.He was a very independent dog. It took him a very long time to get use to us all. He had his challenges and his biggest was he was a diabetic. He lived 6 more years and in the end his illness took over and he left us weighing 6 pounds. We miss our shaggy.
